There is no reason to fear adding a bit of color to your home. Especially when you're armed with the help of Paint Box, a guide to choosing colors, textures, and patterns by best selling author and interior designer Tricia Guild.

In the book, Guild has curated 45 palettes and designed rooms around them that offer something for everyone — from maximalists to minimalists, modernists to vintage lovers. Every room is accompanied by design tips and a directory of Designers Guild paint colors, fabrics, and wallpapers to help you recreate your favorite rooms at home.

Here are 7 of of Guild's highly-crafted palettes and rooms to inspire you to get painting.

Guild says decorating an all-white room is one of the most difficult schemes to pull off, and offers a few tips for those taking on the challenge. Blue-toned white walls suit sunny light-filled rooms, while a yellow-tone white works better in a north-facing space.

"When choosing an all-white room ensure that all aspects — walls, drapes, shades, furniture, accessories, etc. — are united in their tones of white, to avoid potential pitfalls," Guild advises.

Faded Frescoes

If you dream of Italian vacations amid Renaissance frescoes, you might consider extending that joy to your living room with Guild's "Faded Frescoes" palette. It looks great against a natural linen shade, she says, and brings a mood of elegance and serenity to a room.

You should avoid any sharp blue-whites or gray-whites, Guild says. "[K]eep your neutral soft and gentle to echo fresh or wet plaster."

3

Mid-Century Modern

Pulling inspiration from the period's moody and natural style, this palette employs olive and emerald, plus a shade of charcoal that "provides a neutral backbone" to "underline the palette's almost bookish tone."

Guild recommends maintaining the mid-century mood by keeping details simple with white walls, wooden furniture and wools or tweeds.

Vintage Roses

For those more into vintage romance than modern touches, Guild gives roses an approachable, informal touch by adding in casual linen.

To toughen up the palette, Guild suggests trying off-beat colors, such as a warm denim blue.

5

Old Provence

Guild says you can tweak this soft, dreamy palette — reminiscent of fields of lavender and ancient stone villages — by skewing cooler in sunnier rooms or choosing a warmer-based mauve for darker rooms.

"Texture is a brilliant way of adding warmth without compromising on the tones," Guild says. "[R]ich velvets and shaded wools will automatically add depth."

6

Rococo

You can evoke the glamour of eighteenth-century French royalty with lush blooms and bottle greens, set against neutral-toned walls for balance.

Guild says this palette works wonders for rooms with little natural light. To recreate, "use warm rich tones of plum or eggplant on walls, allowing the color to be the focus of the room."

A daring bright pink is refined and tempered by slate grey and jade here in Guild's palette. To add glamour and punch, try a "shot of turquoise silk" that can stand up to the strong pink hue.
