All-in-one electric car package: You can now pay for a vehicle, charger and energy tariff in ONE monthly payment starting from £430

  • Octopus Electric Vehicles has launched the 'personal electric vehicle package'
  • It consolidates the cost of leasing an electric car, having a homecharger and energy tariff into one monthly payment
  • It also covers the cost of breakdown assistance, tyres, servicing and repairs
  • For a more-affordable EV like the MG ZS, monthly costs are around £430

Becoming an electric car owner can be a daunting prospect.

Not only do you need to forget most things you've known about vehicle ownership, you have to decide which model is best, where and how to charge it and shop around for a competitive energy tariff - a tough call in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis.

However, there is now a new potential option to make the transition easier.

Octopus Electric Vehicles has this week launched a new 'all-you-need' package, which provides drivers with the long-term lease of an electric car, homecharging device and EV-specific energy tariff that's consolidated into a monthly payment for starting from £430.

The green energy provider behind it says it has also pre-ordered a number of in-demand electric cars, so drivers who opt in will likely be able to jump extensive waiting lists to get their hands on the latest battery-powered models.

The EV bundle has been made available in Britain from this week and has also launched in the US.

Called the 'personal electric vehicle package', it follows the success of Octopus' salary sacrifice scheme, to which 1,500 businesses have signed up in the last 15 months to take advantage of incredibly low EV-only benefit in kind taxation in recent years.

Customers who take up the new all-in-one package will be guided through the whole experience - this includes having EV experts on hand to help choose the right car.

And opting in could allow you to get your hands on an EV sooner than other customers.

Recent reports claim that motorists looking to make the switch will have to wait between 12 and 24 months for new electric car orders to be delivered.

This is no necessarily due to the high demand that exists, but because manufacturers are still struggling to get their hands on components - especially semiconductor computer chips - that are needed when building them.

MG dealers have recently suspended UK orders for its ZS EV and 5 EV, such is the scale of the problem, which Tesla is now quoting a two-year waiting list for the Model S and Model X cars.

In a bid to have the package hit the ground running from launch, Octopus has pre-ordered a number of popular EVs so customers can get on the road sooner rather than later.

Among the models it has placed orders in bulk include the Tesla Model Y - the US brand's latest SUV, which was the second best-selling new car in Britain last month.

The company told This is Money it has also placed factory orders for Polestar's impressive 2 family hatchback and the all-new Genesis GV60 - a luxury 4X4 from Hyundai's luxury spin-off brand.

The offer includes a free Ohme Home Pro smart charger installation and access to the brand's 'Intelligent Octopus' flexible charging tariff that will only charge the vehicle when it is best for the energy system.

The green energy tariff has a low-cost window between 11.30pn and 5.30am, offering 7.5p per kWh charging - that compares to the price cap of 28p.

Customers also receive 5,000 free miles on the tariff.

For those without off-street parking and therefore can't have a homecharger installed, they instead receive 5,000 free miles on Octopus's public Electric Juice Network with a pre-paid card that allows them to access devices from major providers, including Ionity, Osprey and Shell Recharge.

In Britain, the monthly cost also covers tyre replacement, servicing, repairs and AA breakdown assistance.

The monthly cost will depend on the vehicle chosen and the length of the agreement (between one and four years).

For instance, if you wanted a Tesla Model Y on a three-year lease with the all-inclusive bundle, it works out at £859 a month (subject to Tesla's changeable pricing for its vehicles). A more-affordable MG ZS is £430 a month.

'Over the course of a three-year lease period, an average UK driver on Intelligent Octopus with 5,000 free miles can save up to £3,775 on fuel costs compared to an equivalent petrol car,' the green company claims.

Fiona Howarth, chief executive of Octopus Electric Vehicles, said: 'Demand for electric cars is soaring - driven by over 65 amazing cars from 28 manufacturers, low running costs and convenient charging at home and work.

'We've seen that drivers are looking for experts that can offer the full EV package to guide them through their journey.

'With more EV models entering the market every month, and innovative tariffs like Intelligent Octopus making charging your car as easy as your phone, we only expect the transition to accelerate.

'Our roads are transforming and we plan to lead from the front, making it easy for drivers to switch to clean, electric cars.'

Edmund King, the president of the AA and an EV owner, added: 'As EVs become more prevalent, so too do the needs of drivers looking to make the switch.

'This innovative product really shows that no boxes have been left unchecked when drivers transition to a greener vehicle.'
